M87, the nearest radio galaxy hosting a supermassive black hole of six billion solar masses, offers a unique laboratory for probing black hole accretion and jet-launching mechanisms. Over the past two decades, high-resolution observations at multiple spatial scales have revealed striking structural variations in its jet and accretion system. By linking these variations across microarcsecond to milliarcsecond scales, we uncover dynamic interactions between the black hole spin, the accretion disk, and the relativistic jet. In this talk, I will summarize recent progress from multi-scale VLBI monitoring of M87, highlight observational evidence for jet–disk–black hole coupling, and discuss the implications of these findings for our broader understanding of black hole physics, jet formation, and time-domain AGN studies.
BIO
Dr. Yuzhu Cui is a researcher at Central China Normal University. She began her training in radio astronomy in 2013 and completed her Ph.D. at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan at the end of 2021. She subsequently held postdoctoral positions at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and Zhejiang Lab. Her research focuses on supermassive black holes, active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and relativistic jet dynamics. Since 2017, Dr. Cui has been an active member of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration and contributed to the imaging of the first black hole shadows in M87. She has led a long-term VLBI monitoring program of M87 with the East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN).
