Gravitational Waves and Fast Radio Bursts are a new class of cosmological sources dominated by wave effects instead of geometric optics. I present recent results from plasma lensing, and future opportunities for gravitational lensing of FRBs and gravitational waves where wave effects change the physical observables. These enable potential precision cosmological distance measurements.

    BIO

Ue-Li Pen is a theoretical astrophysicist who studies systems where basic physical effects can be isolated from astronomical complexities. He is currently the Director at the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ASIAA), a professor at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA), and a senior fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR). Pen obtained Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Princeton University in 1995 and then became a Harvard Junior Fellow before he joined CITA in 1998. His research projects include Fast Radio Burst (FRB) and pulsar lensing, non-linear dynamics of the cosmic neutrino background, 21cm intensity mapping, Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME), and Bustling Universe Radio Survey Telescope in Taiwan (BURSTT). His work on 21 cm intensity mapping opens a new window for the precision study of dark energy and neutrinos. His use of natural plasma in our galaxy as a giant telescope spawned the field of scintillometry, enabling new glimpses into enigmatic pulsars and the unsolved fast radio bursts. Among his many awards are Simons Investigator Award, Humboldt Research Award, Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (as part of Event Horizon Telescope team), Lancelot Berkeley Prize, NSERC Brockhouse Canada and Buchalter Cosmology Prize (as part of CHIME Telescope Team). He has been elected as a Fellow to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) in 2022 for his outstanding scientific achievements.
